Doug McBeath – The Skew Chisel
Doug’s demo on the Skew started with a Spindle Gouge and it’s use in roughing out a spindle. He continued with a discussion of the various shapes/sizes of skews and their applications and progressed to a discussion of the sharpening of any Skew regardless of shape or size. He emphasized that any sharpening must be followed with the use of a hone to produce the clean edge needed for any Skew cut. A CBN or Diamond hone is best for this. Doug went on to demonstrate a planing cut, a V cut and a facing cut. He also showed the use of the Skew in a “Lacer” Cut which uses the skew to rough out a spindle instead of a Roughing Gouge. See this on the Alan Lacer video – “Meet the Skew”.
Doug also passed on some “Hints”:
– make sure the tool rest is clean and smooth – if necessary, use a Mill File to resurface the tool rest.
– a sheet of “Dryer Cloth” (anti-static cloth) wiped over the surfaces if your face shield will help prevent the attraction of dust.
The Audience broke for Coffee.
Barrie Baptie – Making a “Pin Cushion”
Barrie started off a bit disorganized, but showed why this item is called a Pin Cushion by picking up a pile of pins. (As well as a number that fell on the floor due to clumsiness.) He went on to describe the blank options and the mounting in the chuck to cut the mortise for the next stage. He discussed using a parting tool, but pointed out that a Forstner bit is superior. The blank was mounted in Pin Jaws for the shaping of the bottom of the Pin Cushion. The sanding and finishing was described. Barrie vocalized about the use of O.B. Shine Juice for finishing the bottom. A finished Top appeared and the cutting of the mortise for the magnet was described (again using a Forstner bit) as well as the fixing of the magnet with either CA glue or Epoxy. The final decorating of the top using a variety of techniques was described. The audience adjourned to the Show and Tell.
